Ashley Vaughn West was born and lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She was first published in a poetry compilation at the age of fourteen. After high school, Ashley received an academic scholarship to Dillard University. While at Dillard she majored in political science and excelled as a student. She enjoyed learning about the world she lived in as she pondered how to change its iniquities. It was at Dillard University that Ashley began to embrace her writing style and become more confident in her craft, often blending poetry and hip hop to create music. During her time at Dillard University, she was asked by the Dean of the Political Science Department to help research and write for an annual political journal on the political economy of oil. In 2005 Hurricane Katrina devastated the New Orleans area and Dillard University suffered severe damage to the campus. As a result, Ashley transferred to Louisiana State University where she completed the remaining credits to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology.
After college Ashley received a job offer in state and local government where she worked within the constraints of her major. However, something seemed to be missing as she yearned to feed her creative side. This intense longing leads her to careers in broadcast television and advertising. She now works in advertising and marketing which allows her to combine pragmatic practices with innovative approaches. Her favorite poet is Sunni Patterson and her favorite movement in American Poetry is the Harlem Renaissance.
